I lived in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, and read Arthur Conan Doyle. The family moved to Westminster. I worked in Huntington Beach and read John Steinbeck. In Anaheim, I worked in Fountain Valley and read Fitzgerald and Hemingway. In Garden Grove, I went to college in Huntington Beach, studied journalism and read Hunter Thompson. I lived in a dorm at Pitzer college and studied psychology and read Nabokov and Shakespeare. In Montclair, I worked in Upland and read James Joyce and Herman Hesse. I lived in downtown Claremont, studied literature, worked in San Dimas, read Henry Miller and J. D. Salinger. I spend time in Paris and studied Jean Luc Goddard and read Roland Barthes and Guillaume Apollinaire. I lived in Los Feliz, worked in midtown and read Raymond Chandler. I lived in East Hollywood, worked in West Hollywood, read Kurt Vonnegut and studied the JFK assassination, traveling to Dealey Plaza and Washington DC.
I lived in Hollywood and worked the westside, read Dashiell Hammett and studied the OSS. I was unemployed in Glendale living on food stamps, donating blood and reading James Cain and studied the Cold War & the CIA. I lived and worked in Los Angeles at a midtown retirement hotel, read Bertolt Brecht and studied the politics of the Vietnam war. I lived on the Venice boardwalk, worked in Ocean Park, went to college in Santa Monica, studied theater, read Sam Shepard and Ken Kesey and studied Robert Kennedy’s assassination. I moved to the Venice ghetto, read Charles Bukowski, worked in Hollywood reading scripts and studied the Zodiac killings. Living in Koreatown, I worked in Santa Monica near the airport and read John Le Carré. In Santa Monica, I lived and worked at the ocean and studied the methodology of the Hillside Stranglers. In all those years in the greater Los Angeles area I was never anywhere close to Leimert Park until I began to study the unsolved mystery of the Black Dahlia.
